This project is a redesign of a longboard skateboard company called Nelson Longboards that went out of business in 2015. Skateboarding has been a hobby of mine for nearly a decade and designing branding for a skate company was on my bucket list so I had a lot of fun with this project. Nelson Longboard’s branding was pretty bare bones and after researching designs from other skate brands it was clear that Nelson’s branding didn’t fit the hardcore personality other skate brands embrace. Many of Nelson’s boards had sea creatures on the graphics so I decided to expand on that and make a kraken the logo for the brand to reference the original brand. The name “Siphon Skateboards” came from one of the Nelson Longboards boards called The Siphon.

Skateboarding branding has a distinctive style and I needed to make a logo that would appeal to the industry. Stickers, shirts, and other merchandise are huge in the skate industry so creating a logo skaters (and non skaters) would be excited to represent was important. The most challenging part of this design was integrating the kraken tentacles into the letters while keeping the logo easily legible.
